Chris Churilla - Library & Media Specialist at the Centennial School - Asked for a grant for flexible seating options in the Library Media Center to maximize opportunities for students to learn. The Foundation fully funded his request of $609.75.
Colleen Hinrichsen - STEAM Teacher & Technology Coach - Was looking for a grant to provide 15 Dewey Document Camera & Display Stands for iPads. These stands allow for students to utilize the iPads to there full capabilities in creating hands free stop motion animations and offers additional protections to the iPads. The Foundation has fully funded the request for .$1312.05
Brian Zima, Elementary Teacher, presented a grant for 2 Elmo Document Cameras that can be used throughout the District. The Grant was funded for the full requested amount of $1321.16.
John Emhardt and Nicole Avon, high school physic teachers, presented a grant for STEM CLUB Day at the Centennial Elementary School. Grant was approved at full requested amount of $1,000.00.
Adam Benson and Erin Bridge, middle school technology teachers, presented a grant for Sphero Robots. Grant was approved at full requested amount of $3598.00.
Samantha Flanhofer, special education teacher, presented a grant for "A Night to Remember," and "Ducky Tour." Grant was approved at full requested amount of $725.00.
Anastasi DiLorenzo, computer teacher, presented a grant request for Breakout EDU. Breakout EDU is a computer program that brings critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, and communication alive. The board voted to grant Ms. DiLorenzo her entire grant request of $150.00.
Katie Haney, elementary teacher, presented a grant request for Reading A-Z Subscription. Reading A-Z is a supplemental reading program that reinforces skills through short stories paired with comprehension questions. The board voted to grant Miss Haney her entire grant request of $109.95 for the 2018-2019 school year. The board deferred the grant request to the 2018-2019 school year so her class may utilize the program for the entire school year.
Carol Peters, reading specialist, presented a grant request for Reading A-Z Subscription for 3 years at a rate of $109.95 per year. The board voted to grant Ms. Peters a one year subscription at a rate of $109.95.
Dave Goodworth, social studies teacher, presented a grant request for a film entitled “Nicky’s Family” by Film Pittsburgh. Film Pittsburgh helps Pennsylvania educators comply with state recommendations to expose students to the Holocaust, genocide, and human rights violation and complies with Act 70. The board voted to grant a request of $475.00 for the one time licence of the film “Nicky’s Family”.
December - 2017
The Mars Planet Foundation voted to fund a grant for Emily Diani and Sasha Zavacky, Mars Primary Center Teachers, presented their grant for Osmo. Osmo is an award-winning game system for the Apple I-Pad. The Osmo fosters learning in key areas as problem solving, art, STEM, and Common Core. The Foundation voted to fund the entire grant request of $1, 838.25
The Mars Planet Foundation also voted to Adam Benson, Mars Middle School Teacher, presented his grant for a Sustainability Lab. The grant was a collective grant request from Mr. Benson, Ms. Phillips, Mrs. Winter, Ms. Stavish, and Miss Hegerich. The project is designed to provide all students in seventh and eighth grade a hands-on, cross-curricular, STEAM experience focused on sustainability and the community. The Foundation voted to fund the entire grant request of $2,000.00
November - 2017
The Mars Planet Foundation voted to fund a grant for Erin Bridge at the Middle School for an 8th Grade STEAM Project that will students learn a cross-curricular project with Real World Applications. - $1101.64
The Mars Planet Foundation also voted to partially fund a grant from Cetta Richards, a Mars Elementary Classroom Teacher. She is looking to study the benefits of Flexible Seating in her classrooms that provide better engagement as our technology advances. - $1253.50 is half of the original request and the board will look to evaluate the outcomes of Flexible Seating before granting any further requests.
October - 2017
Mars Planet Foundation Board will proudly support Mr. Wesley's, High School Biology Teacher, Educational Trip to Wallops Island.
The Board will also provide a Grant to Jamie Waters, Debi Kravets and Tracey Jones for Flexible Seating as a pilot program in 3 different types of classroom settings.
The Board also approved the awarding of reimbursement to AP students scoring a 4 or 5 on their AP Test.
November - 2016
The Mars Planet Foundation Board has approved a Teaching Enrichment Grant to the Primary School's Librarian - Adrianne Vandevort. The grant is for her Read Across America Week activities which will greatly benefit and enhance all of the 450 students at the Primary Center.
October - 2016
The Mars Planet Foundation has approved a Teaching Grant to Samantha Flanhofer to create a store in the high school that will sell Mars apparel and other branded items. The goal is to have The Space Shop become a stand alone entity that will eventually serve the district.
The Space Shop should be open after Thanksgiving.
